Preparations gathering pace for National Day

The Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is finalising a host of activities, scheduled from December 15 to 19, in collaboration with the National Day Organising Committee.

At Darb al-Saai near the Sports Roundabout in Doha, several pavilions have already been erected. During a site visit yesterday, the sound system was being tested out and the flood lights were being put in place.

According to the Arabic daily Arrayah, a number of events are scheduled to take place at Darb al-Saai, including a falcon show, camel rides, a vintage cars display and cultural programmes. The events will begin at December 10 and are expected to carry on until December 18.

Flags have been put up on the Corniche. Buildings across Qatar are expected to hoist the national flag and some draped in the national colours, in preparation for the National Day.

The main military parade will be held on the Corniche. According to Arrayah, the dress rehearsals for the parade are expected to begin on December 15. Spectator
stands are already in place.

As the day approaches, people are giving finishing touches to their celebration tents pitched in various spots. The tents will host a myriad of activities.

Most shopping malls and retailers around the country have started displaying National Day-related items such as hats, T-shirts, scarves, Qatari flags, stickers and other festive items. Car accessories shops offer flags and stickers.

September 3 was celebrated as a national holiday until 2007 when the Emiri Diwan decreed that December 18 would be marked annually instead.

All visitors to Qatar at the Abu Samra border post and at Doha International Airport will receive a traditional Qatari welcome as part of the QTA activities.

“The National Day is an opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the actions of Qatar’s forefathers who strived to create a unified nation with the Qatari tribes,” said QTA chairman Issa bin Mohamed al-Mohannadi.

QTA is conducting a National Day competition for the best-decorated hotel front. The competition will put the spotlight on Qatar’s iconic building designs and contemporary architecture.

Football fans in Qatar will have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the FIFA World Cup trophy during its trip to Doha this month.

The trophy will make its way to Doha on December 12 as part of the global tour.

“This tour is an exclusive initiative from Coca-Cola whereby the trophy travels around several markets, allowing millions of people a chance to revel in its glory and experience the excitement of the FIFA World Cup in their own communities, building up the anticipation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro,” a release said yesterday.

The tour is “a moving exhibition of the authentic, solid gold FIFA World Cup trophy which spreads happiness..., as thousands of lucky fans get to not only see the trophy, but also have their photos taken with it with the Coca-Cola ‘fan zone’ experience”, it said.

A ticket-only event will take place in Doha on December 14, “offering fans and media the chance to live the ultimate football experience as well as look back to the history and magic of the FIFA World Cup”, according to the release.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy tour, spanning over 92,000 miles, will cover 89 countries during its nine-month journey. The tour will also be taking in 50 new countries that have never had the opportunity to host the trophy before.

The tour was officially launched in Brazil on September 12, before visiting the Pacific Islands, Central America and the Caribbean.

Following its visit to Qatar, the trophy will conclude its tour in the Middle East with a stop in the United Arab Emirates, before moving on to Europe and South America and finally ending up in April in Brazil, ahead of the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament.

Antoine Tayyar, director of Public Affairs and Communications, Coca-Cola Middle East, said: “We are thrilled to be able to bring the most coveted prize in world football to the Middle East, for what we are sure will be a memorable experience for thousands of fans.”

FIFA ambassador Gabriel Calderon said: “The FIFA World Cup trophy is a symbol of sporting prowess, bringing great nations together to celebrate the beautiful game. I look forward to being in Qatar to witness the delight of football fans there.”

The official website www.fifa.com/trophytour may be visited for the latest information on the World Cup trophy tour, including destinations and date.

Walking woes in Doha as pavements get ‘encroached’

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4837/umyq.jpg

The “encroachment” of pavements by contractors executing construction projects in several locations has made things difficult for pedestrian these days.
Left with little or no space on the footpaths, pedestrians are often forced to walk on the roads – putting their lives in danger and also posing a threat to motorists.
Worryingly, this is happening at a time when the country’s authorities are going ahead with their ambitious plans as part of the ongoing campaign by the National Committee for Traffic Safety.
While the traffic authorities keep reiterating the importance of pedestrian safety, many contractors seem unaware of the seriousness of the matter and end up blocking portions of pavements, which makes pedestrian movement rather difficult.
Gulf Times had earlier reported that “about 80 pedestrians die in Qatar every year and more than 200 suffer from severe injuries that require hospitalisation”.
A visit to some of the busy streets of Doha reveals the extent of the problem. An “encroachment” by a contractor near an intersection in Najma has not only affected the visibility of motorists but also prevented pedestrians from using the pavement there. While the issue has reportedly been brought to the attention of the authorities concerned, the obstacles on the pavement are yet to be removed.
A similar encroachment can be seen along a service road near the Gulf Cinema signal on the busy C-Ring Road.
Meanwhile, “encroachment” by a contractor along the Corniche has not only deprived passengers of a proper bus stop, but also stopped pedestrians from using the footpath along the construction site. As a result, passengers have no place to wait in the area and are forced to stand by the road while waiting for a bus.
Some residents of Doha Jadeed have also complained that many footpaths in the area have been “taken over” by contractors.
Such “encroachments” are leading to other problems as well, including non-availability of parking space.
In the vicinity of Souq Haraj’s southern gate, one can find signboards put up by a contractor, prohibiting motorists from parking vehicles in the designated area in front of a new building coming up there.
It has also been found that the company has “taken over” the entire pavement by erecting a fence along the place. Some shopkeepers in the neighbourhood say they have raised the matter with the contractor more than once but nothing has changed and no parking is possible in the area even now.

Qatar-based social enterprise, The Youth Company, has announced the semi-finals for the Youth Got Talent 2013 (YGT) music and dance competition to take place at Virgin Megastore, Villagio Mall in Doha, Qatar on the evenings of the 6th and 7th of December. The contest is undergoing the second phase out of three within Run The World Festival (RTWF) 2013, a regional youth sports festival and annual initiative of TYC, in partnership with Qatar Museums Authority and Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum. As one of the most anticipated programs of RTWF, YGT has been a trademark event of the festival since its initiation in 2011, and each year, has featured hundreds of young contestants to showcase their talents in singing, instrumentals, and dance.

This year, TYC has partnered with Virgin Megastores for RTWF, which will take place from the 19th to 21st of December at Katara Beach. The international retailer will collaborate with the youth organization in hosting the semi-finals of YGT and will hold a presence within the festival as its entertainment partner. During the semi-finals at Virgin, the selected participants, including a number of solo performing artists, bands, and dance crews, will perform once more before the judges, following with a public voting session. Online voters will also get engaged in the competition through likes of performer’s videos, which will be uploaded to the event’s YouTube channel and promoted through social media. Voting will take place over the coming weeks and finalists will be announced on the onset of RTWF 2013,

Sajid Mammassan, Business Development Director at Spirit Events, and one of the judges on Day 2 of the YGT auditions at Youth Hub Qatar, speaks, “Following a great series of auditions the last weekend, we’ve seen some really amazing talent from young artists from around the region, and we’re lucky to have gotten a sneak peak. The young participants who’ve performed at Youth Hub have really showed off their outstanding vocals, dance moves, musical talent, and more, and we’re eager to see what they have to show in the next round of YGT!”

As a regional youth festival, RTWF is set to attract audiences between the ages of 14-29 years of age, with various interests in activities. For this reason, the three-day festival features a number of exciting programs for youth to get involved in, such as RTW Village, a space for live on-stage musical performances by DJs and finalists of YGT, as well as cultural, commercial and community exchange, RTW Street, displaying the colorful street culture, as well as extreme and team-oriented sports activities on the beach.

“YGT is certainly one of the highlight shows of the festival, and Virgin Megastore is an ideal entertainment partner firstly due to its largely youth-based target customers in the MENA region, being an a top retailer for videogames, music, film, books, merchandise, and more. We are certainly excited to have their presence and support at RTWF 2013, and hope that the tens and thousands of youth we are expecting this year feel likewise,” said Aya Abu Issa, CEO of The Youth Company.

Over 700 new jobs are expected to be announced to cater to customs services at Hamad International Airport (HIA), including for the new cargo terminal, said a senior official in charge of the Customs Department at the new Air Cargo Terminal, Al Sharq website reported yesterday.

“We have increased our staff by 50 percent to over 700 employees. However, the administration is seeking to raise the number of staff for Cargo Village and the passenger terminal at HIA to 400 and 1,000, respectively. This means over 700 new jobs are to be announced,” Khalid Hamad Al Kaabi, Acting Director at the department, said.

However, he did not provide details about the time-frame and positions.

He said the administration is striving for building capacity by enhancing efficiency of existing staff by providing them with training and skill development programmes.

He said new recruits will be required to pass through rigorous training and courses, including on-the-job training in administration, customs, police and other institutions to gain practical experience.

Joblessness among nationals up

$

The rate of joblessness among Qataris was much higher than the national average in the third quarter (Q3) of this year.

Official figures reflect that while the national unemployment rate in that quarter was a negligible 0.3 percent, the ratio was six times higher, at 1.8 percent, among locals.

This is, apparently, the first time the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics has released joblessness figures for the Qatari community.

Qatar’s job market remains heavily dominated by expatriates as of the total workforce of 1.483 million, only 86,000 Qatari were economically active in Q3 this year.

Women were also grossly under-represented in the local job market, with their ratio being barely 12 percent, or 343,000.

However, as for Qatari workforce, women comprised a third (34 percent) of it. Of the economically inactive people, half were women, most of them expatriates.

While 51 percent expatriate women were economically inactive, the percentage was lower at 26.3 among their Qatari counterparts, Al Sharq reported yesterday.

Average pay in the country was QR10,000 for men and up to QR8,000 for women.

As hot as the Sahara and standing every bit as tall as pyramids, they’re the single most successful group to have emerged from the spiritual lands of Egypt. From the Med to the Red and from up high in Cairo, to down deep in the Sinai, they’ve built an immense, ultra-loyal in-country following, From that foothold turntable Shamans, Aly Amr Fathalah and Fadi Wassef Naguib went global. With their career-launching Egyptrance releases (inc. ‘Eye of Horus’ and ‘Spirit of Ka’) through to latter-day master-blasters like ‘We Control The Sunlight’, their production credentials are only now matched by their spinning ones. Ranked as one of the 20 biggest DJ acts in EDM (source: DJ Magazine Top 100 DJs 2012), they delight crowds now numbered annually in the millions, bringing their inimitable sound to the world’s most prestigious clubs and festivals. No mirage, no illusion - this is Aly & Fila.

For close to a decade their spirited take on the trance sound has captured the hearts, minds and imaginations of planet trance. With their whip-smart productions and sandstorm sonics, their performances have raised the bar at some of the world’s most recognized clubs. Comparably they’ve also ruled at EDM’s biggest festivals – EDC - Las Vegas, Tomorrowland, Global Gathering, Dance Valley, Stereosonic, WMC and Full On Ferry to name just a few. Continuing in a long tradition of playing the world’s most established and respected stages, in Spring 2013 they will rock ASOT600. Marking the 7th successive year they’d done so, the Egyptian duo are the only spinners aside from Armin Van Buuren and Markus Schulz to have played such a run. This combined force of production and turntable feats has resulted in string of high charting positions in several of EDMs’ key polls. Included amongst them are six consecutive years in DJ Mag’s annual countdown (reaching #19 in 2012) and a #4 notch on TranceAddict’s Top 250 in the same year.

Spreading the A&F message around the globe is their Future Sound of Egypt radio show. Beaming to countless thousands of desktops every week, August 2012 saw its 250th episode hit airwaves. This was marked by the FSOE250 event, which drew fans from all four corners to the Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheik to see them spin alongside DJs inc. Ferry Corsten, W&W, Shogun and Sean Tyas. With the 300th show primed for 2013, FSOE300 will expand into a multi-date, multi-country world tour experience.

The Future Sound of Egypt marque is further amplified by Aly & Fila’s widely respected imprint of the same name. A label sub-division of the industry leading Armada Music empire, through it they have rained continuous floor-fire, with one A-list championed release following another. With ‘We Control the Sunlight’, the pair scored the biggest trance track of the year when the listeners of Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance radio show voted it Tune of 2011. Throughout 2012 they continued to bring some of the year’s best music to club & festival sound-systems. Among them were collaborations with Roger Shah (on ‘Perfect Love’) and Solarstone with ‘Fireisland’. It also saw them re-team with ‘We Control’ singer Jawden on ‘Coming Home’, for a track that DJ Mag cited as “making hairs stand up, goosebumps pop, hands shoot up and jaws meet floors!” They also reworked Gareth Emery’s ‘Concrete Angel’ (which subsequently became the best-selling trance track of 2012), as well as other smash tracks from Andy Moor and Alex M.O.R.P.H.

Into the New Year and the cyphers for A&F’s future are every bit as filled with promise. Continuing to hold floors spellbound, their latest collaboration ‘Vapourize’ (alongside John O’Callaghan) has already delivered another Beatport slam-dunk. The single is the pathfinder release for the pair’s hugely anticipated sophomore artist album ‘Quiet Storm’. The follow-up to 2010’s ‘Rising Sun’ debut, the long-player’s mission kismet is to bring another gravity defying selection of anthems to the world’s floors. ‘Quiet Storm’s surge is set for 2013.

I would suggest you that you should stick to healthy diets and drink more water. If you are unable to exercise than you should practice yoga or stretching it will burn your calories and improve your metabolism. The most important thing you should care of is keep patience and have faith. You are not supposed to lose weight overnight, it will take time.

Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris Launches Floral Workshops with Jeff Leatham

Four Seasons Hotel George V is launching an exclusive Parisian experience by offering guests the opportunity to participate in a floral arrangement class hosted by Jeff Leatham, the Hotel’s acclaimed Artistic Director.
Renowned throughout the world for his spectacular floral creations, Jeff has truly revolutionized floral art. His talent extends beyond the Hotel and he is regularly called up to choreograph the most prestigious events. He has contributed notably to the reopening party of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as collaborating with Kylie Minogue and more recently, he created the flower arrangements for Tina Turner’s wedding. Even Oprah Winfrey herself has become a huge fan and invited him in 2012 to participate as a guest on her television show about dream jobs.

Jeff Leatham will organize a floral art workshop quarterly within the Hotel. It is a rare occasion to meet the famous artist amid his favourite flowers and to discover his truly unique way of creating a flower bouquet. The two hour lesson takes place in one of the Hotel salons, and begins with a floral art demonstration followed by the opportunity to put into practice individually and create one's own bouquet.

Jeff is delighted to share his passion for flowers with guests of the place where he has spent the last 14 years living in perfect harmony. Each month, he concocts a new theme and creates his designs on the spot thanks to the 9000 flowers that are delivered each week from Holland.

"More than a class that teaches how to arrange flowers, it is a magical and unforgettable moment where our guests have the privilege to be able to assist. It is a unique moment in the company of one of the most "rock and roll' florists in the world," declares Christian Clerc, regional vice president and general manager of Four Seasons Hotel George V.

Jeff’s workshop is free of charge and open to all Hotel and restaurant Le Cinq’s guests upon reservation with the Concierges on 01 49 52 71 07.

His Excellency Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage inaugurated the 24th Doha International Book Fair at the Doha Exhibition Centre today. The Book Fair will be one of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture’s last events and will remain open until the 14th of December.

This year the United Kingdom (UK) is the guest of honour at the Doha International Book Fair. The UK pavilion and its partners will organise several activities and workshops for families, children and book enthusiasts.

Director of the British Council, Martin Hope, said: “On behalf of the British Council and the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, I extend our deep gratitude to His Excellency the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, His Excellency Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari, for his support, enthusiasm and for this great honour. Education is a key pillar of Qatar’s National Vision for 2030 and the exchange of knowledge and ideas between British publishers and writers and their Qatari counterparts furthers the purpose of the Year of Culture by strengthening ties for years to come.”

The British Council and Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing, in partnership with the British Centre for Literary Translation, will host The Literary Translation Summit. The summit will bring together thirty-six writers and translators for an intensive week of literary translation workshops and panel discussions. Two workshops will focus on translations from English to Arabic, and a third will focus on Arabic to English. Marilyn Booth will lead the Arabic to English workshop, with Hassan Daoud as author. Zeinab Mobarak will lead the first English to Arabic workshop, with Nadifa Mohamed as author and Nariman Youssef will lead the second English to Arabic workshop, with David Szalay as author. The summit will also include a panel discussion on translation of Shakespeare’s works as well as a discussion on life as a literary translator and resources for translation, including national translation organisations in the United Kingdom and Arab world.

Arend Kuster, Director of Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation, said: “We are delighted to participate with Qatar UK and the British Council during the book fair. The broad range of activities showcases how our publishing initiatives touch many people - from story times for children to panels for high-level academics. Because Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation is a unique partnership, we are able to weave our literacy activities into the fabric of everyday life in Qatar and beyond.”

The Publishers Association, the Qatar Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, British Embassy and the British Council are bringing five UK editors to Qatar including: Judy Pearsall, Editorial Director at Oxford University Press; Sophie Buchan, Commissioning Editor for Orion Books; Rona Selby, Editorial Director for Andersen Press, an imprint of Random House; and Lynn Gaspard, Publisher from Saqi Books. During their time in Doha they will meet Qatari editors to discuss opportunities for future collaboration.

For the first time, on December 6th, Qatari novelist Abdulaziz Al Mahmoud will discuss the historical context of his translated work, The Corsair, with an expert on the region, Dr. Abdullah Baabood. The novel is set against the backdrop of an important period in history for the Arabian Peninsula and British Empire.

For families and children, the British Council will have renowned UK guest storyteller Alec Williams engaging and entertaining primary school classes with his repertoire of stories in the ‘Learn English Kids’ zone and ‘Maktaba Storytelling Time’, in English and Arabic. WH Smith part of Al Meera mother company, has supported the reading activities and provided more than 200 books titles out of 500 UK titles.

Coinciding with the fair is an innovative exchange initiative called Walking Cities: Doha and Derry Londonderry. Walking Cities pairs two writers from different cities to exchange ideas, share their work, and immerse themselves in the culture and writing of a foreign city. A Qatari woman said she had been duped of QR50,000 by an African man who claimed he could help her win over her husband’s love with his spiritual powers.

The woman said one fine day she got a call on her mobile phone which was from overseas as was obvious from the number displayed.

She said she took the phone and a man spoke from the other end. “He told me two women were after my husband and that he could help get rid of them.”

The man gave some personal details about her husband which convinced her that he could be speaking the truth, according to the woman, reports Al Sharq.

“He told me he needed to do some rituals and for which he would need some money, but in the end the two women who were after my husband would vanish and he would shower all his love on me.”

The woman said after talking to the man she got to know that he was from an African country. “He asked me to send some money which I did.”

The man, according to his victim, sent her a list of instructions to be followed in order for his rituals to be effective.

“I became hundred percent sure that those so-called rituals would work and I would eventually win my husband’s love. He would call me occasionally asking to send more money to do more rituals saying they weren’t over yet, and I obliged.”

However, as time lapsed the woman said she realized that her husband’s attitude towards her remained entirely unchanged.

“It suddenly dawned on me one day that I was taken for a ride by a swindler. I had by then sent around QR50,000 to this man but to no avail.”
